3 Breakthrough Strategies to Decrease Meltdowns and Dysregulation in Neurodivergent Kids

Feel free to watch it sped up if you’re short on time 😉

What looks like a kid being bad may be sensory needs, and you can help!

Pay close attention because this could change a child’s future…

Most parents never imagine that their child will struggle with a hidden challenge that affects so many different aspects of their life, and ultimately keeps them from reaching their full potential. As therapists we can help parents fill in the missing pieces and improve our own treatment sessions…

Do You Ever See Kids That…

Z

Aren't like the other kids?

Something is a little different and you see them struggling to “fit in”.

Z

Have big emotions and meltdown at the drop of a dime?

Parents and teachers look to use for do-able solutions.’

Z

Is wild, active, and never stops?

The classic sensory seeker that has been tragically mislabeled.

Z

Are treated unfairly because of their "behaviors"?

And it’s hard to watch!

Z

Is very sensitive to textures, lights, sounds, and/or movement.

It’s hard to break down sensitivities with 1 session a week.

If you answered yes to any of the above, then it’s a sure bet kids on your caseload have sensory processing needs.

Sensory is often the hidden reason kids are labeled as bad, weird, quirky, hyper, or sensitive…

Likely, you’ll be the first person to tell many parents about sensory processing. It’s critical and elevates your treatment when you’re able to educate parents about sensory in a way they can understand and follow through on. It is the absolute foundation of a child’s development. It affects every and all aspects of a child’s life.

That’s why when a child’s sensory processing isn’t working well, it can cause kids a lot of stress, frustration, or missed opportunities from participating fully in their childhood.

As a result kids can specifically struggle with any of the following:

Learning

Paying attention

Following directions

Sitting still

Overly sensitive to

smells

Playing

Socializing

Communicating

Staying alert and being

tired, even though they

             slept enough

Constantly seeking out

movement by running,

             climbing, and crashing

And, that’s just to name a few. Unfortunately, since most people don’t know about sensory processing, kids with sensory processing difficulties get labeled as bad, weird, quirky, hyper, or sensitive.

But, that’s not the whole picture, not even close.

You can change everything for a child.

Sensory kids are misunderstood because nobody is seeing the hidden reason for the frustrating, exhausting, or confusing things they do.

But, when you know that a child’s brain isn’t processing sensations well, that it’s all because of their sensory processing, you can understand AND help the child and parents actually improve any sensory issues they have.

YOU can improve kid’s sensory issues with Sensory Integration Strategies!!!

It’s true. Sensory strategies are specific tools and techniques that do two things:

Sensory strategies help your child manage their sensory issues so that they can cope, adjust, and participate in the various activities of their life.

Sensory Integration strategies, when used well, actually can rewire the brain to improve sensory processing which improves overall regulation baseline AND decrease sensory needs.

Sensory strategies are the missing solution, unless they’re used wrong…

Many people use sensory strategies the wrong way, even though that’s not their intention. They’re often trying to DIY sensory strategies from a Google search or what they heard from a friend. The problem with that is sensory needs and the strategies that work are unique to each child.

Because kids have so many different sensory issues, the wrong sensory strategy for a child could actually make their sensory processing worse (gasp!) or be a total waste of time.

I know you don’t want that, especially as a therapist.

Using sensory strategies well is what you need to have kid’s overcome sensory challenges and RISE to their full potential.

I’ve been a pediatric occupational therapist for over 20 years and very early in my career, I learned the power that sensory strategies had to utterly change a child’s life. So many times it 100% is the missing link.

That work began here in my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA where I served hundreds of families, and then expanded to thousands around the world through the Your Kid’s Table blog and the RISE with Sensory program.

This course is fantastic! I am a pediatric OT and have taken many sensory courses during my many years of practice, many that were complex, confusing, & simply overwhelming in content.  Alisha really simplifies this topic and makes it easy to process and thus deliver to both parents and kids. This course is filled with hundreds of nuggets that I will return to for years to come- which is the last perk.  My access is lifelong, so I can return and review whatever I need in the days ahead.  Thank you for such a fantastic resource for my therapy business!!!!!!!”

v

Sharilynn

“Best course I have taken in 17 years of cont ed! I am a parent but also a PT. I only had experience in adult ortho PT. I have taken my son to numerous OTs and none were ever to help him until I took this course. Love that it is for parents and professionals.”

v

Jaime

I am an OT with 20+ years experience with about 7 in peds. I love the language you use to make difficult concepts easy to understand. It helps with basic understanding as well as give language for therapists to use to help communicate sensory information to parents. I took this course as a review and to also determine the benefit for new therapists at our clinic. I will definitely be recommending.”

RISE with Sensory is for you…

If you work with kids.

It doesn’t matter if a child’s sensory issues are big or specific. It doesn’t matter if your child is 2 or 10. And, it doesn’t matter if sensory issues are the only thing a child struggles with or they have a diagnosis of SPD, ADHD, or Autism. Sensory processing difficulties affect a wide range of kids, and this program will show you how to hone in a child’s unique needs and work through them simply, step-by-step.

“This was fabulous! I am a special educator and now serve as a School Building Leader for an Early Childhood Program for Children with Special Needs. The content and instruction were perfect for someone who is not an OT or PT. I have taken other courses on sensory processing etc. I have always felt dissatisfied by my lack of understanding. Often technical language and jargon interfere with the learning process. Wonderful resources, strategies, cheat sheets, etc.!!!! BEST TRAINING!!!!”

“This was worth it, even as an experienced therapist to have the sensory information to give to parents, and help me organize the information in my own brain to make it easier to relay to families.. Presented in a slow, even, non – judgemental manner that parents seem likely to be receptive to.”

v

Marion

“Excellent explanation of SI.  I have read a number of books and taken several courses but Alisha’s breakdown and specific examples of SI are the best I have come across.  I love watching the videos but also have access to the slides and PDF.  That way I can go back to her material in the future.  So glad I took this course!  I will recommend it to all my fellow therapists!”

What Happens If You Don’t Learn How to Use Sensory Strategies Well?

Unfortunately, I see this happen all the time. Parents tell me all the time that they went to an OT that didn’t know about sensory processing. Or, their kid was having major sensory challenges and all they focused on was their fine motor goals.

Even if sensory integration isn’t a goal (it often isn’t) it is 100% a best practice to use it as a prepatory activity so that a child is regulated and can perform the fine motor activities to the best of their ability.

If you aren’t an OT, but another professional working with kids, you will elevate your quality of practice by being able to appropriately regulate kids for your session while treating the whole child. Talk about best practice. And, think of the impact you’ll have for the family when you can share strategies and resources easily.

Whether you don’t know much about sensory processing or a season therapist this program will teach you a system you can use immediately in treatment AND easily turn around to teach to parents in a simple way. Having sensory not be mind bending and do-able. It’s kinda my thing. You’ll see when you get inside RISE with Sensory.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have access?

Indefinitely! We guarantee a year on everything, but as long as we have it running as a program and are a business, you have it. We don’t anticipate any of that changing any time soon. So, there is no expiration, and you can use these CEUs and printables for years to come.

Also, all printables come with a download so you can keep and re-use over and over again.

I'm an SLP, PT, or other professional. Do the CEUs work for me?

We’ve had speech therapists, physical therapists, teachers, and massage therapists take our courses and have had no problem with them submitting our personalized AOTA approved certificates for their credits. Most acknowledge and accept courses provided by the AOTA, but check with your own governing body.

Can I share the printables with my caseload?

YES! You can download all printables, screenings, checklists, and digital resources to use in treatment, share with parents for follow through at home, and for use in the classroom when applicable.

Can I share the printables with other therapists and friends?

This one’s a no. While we encourage you to share printables with your caseload and use them in treatment forever, our copyright is for your individual use only. However, please feel free to send anyone interested our way so they can get their own set of printables and courses.

Can I get a refund?

Due to the large digital nature of this program, no, we don’t offer refunds as most materials can be downloaded and copied as soon as you access.

v

Allison

“I love the sensory checklist, which really helps my parents to understand what I am talking about, whereas when I hand them a Sensory Profile to fill out, they often find that confusing.  I have also evolved my practice to talk about the “E” for evaluation…I often felt I needed to do that myself as the OT, but I now realize just how much of that needs to come from the parents and their daily experiences and I am more like a coach.  I have loved this course!”

v

Michele

The entire course was just fabulous!  Many aspects of it were foundational to an OT practicing about 33 years, HOWEVER, it was most informational, a phenomenal review along with new learner. The resources are outstanding and particularly helpful for parents. It has given me a much more systematic way of addressing sensory concerns/processing issues. Thank you so much.”

v

Linda

“As a pediatric massage & touch therapist specializing in ASD, SPD & ADHD, this is the most complete and comprehensive training I have undertaken specific to my field.   The course is professional from beginning to end.   How the course is designed, the true life scenarios, the down to Earth explanations all work together for the learner to feel successful, knowledgeable and, empowered in their learning.  The program handouts are clear, concise, and informative.   I know this will elevate my clinic and practical skills and best of all, benefit the children and families that I work with to improve their quality of life.  Thank you to Alisha and team, it truly is an amazing course and I’m grateful I found it.”

v

Amy

“I’m again in awe, because being calm, relaxed, and able to follow along with the art activity like the rest of the kids in his class is so different from his usual daily struggles. Sensory has been the key!!!! He’s now getting the right input his body needs so he can be regulated enough to do a task like art work with his school friends.”
